After completing a Diploma in Jazz and Popular Performance in 2001, Emma took the opportunity to head overseas for contract work in Tokyo, Japan at the Asukusa View Hotel. Over a few short months, Emma was immersed in a new culture and language, always standing out as taller and often the only blonde in the local popluation. Learning a new language and set of values made Emma realise the joys of cultural diversity.
Being in Japan taught me so many things, about what you take for granted in life and how amazing a barrier culture and language can be. It's truly another world, and in many ways a better one. I felt so welcomed on the streets, and yet could not understand so much, like how to get directions! I really learned the value of a song there, for it was through song that I could communicate and touch the audience. I will always treasure my time in Japan and the friends I made there.
