About Emma
About...Vocalist Emma Sidney ... wowed audiences with her honey-toned and sexy voice. Merimbula News Weekly - July 2000 Emma grew up with the certainty that all she ever wanted to do was sing. Along the way to jazz Emma spent many years learning classical singing, taking roles on stage and performing in choirs on stage and TV. In 1995 jazz arrived in Emma's world. A BBQ jam with Gil Askey, an introduction to Ella Fitzgerald and Julie London and a young pianist all led to a new pursuit, passion and vocation. A Diploma of Jazz and Popular Performance (Box Hill TAFE 2000) followed as well as work in Japan in 2001 and 2002. Roaming through the jungle of "Ohs" and "Ahs" searching for a more agreeable noise, I live a life of primitivity with the mind of a child and an unquenchable thirst for sharps and flats. Duke Ellington 2002 saw the release of Emma's first album, Love Rhapsody, w hich had Australia wide airplay and favourable reviews nationally and internationally. Emma included three self penned tunes on the album and became a Writer, Full Member of APRA.
The next few years saw Emma working in many of Australia's best venues, such as Crown Casino, Manchester Lane and Dizzy's Jazz Club and most notably at the Scotchmans Hill Concert 2004 (Spray Farm) as support act to Anthony Warlow & Rhonda Birchmore, to a crowd of 7000. Emma was called upon as Industry Judge for three series of a talent quest at Pescare Restaurant between 2005 and 2007. Seeing hundreds of performers and bands and giving constructive feedback led to Emma developing a set of tools that cross musical styles and apply well to performers of all ages. 2007 saw Emma follow her passion for Latin and jazz to create a jazz album in homage to the Brazilian sound and esthetic of Antonio (Tom) Carlos Jobim. Dance in the Light brings an acoustic feel to a range of material, using the brilliance of Todd Sidney (piano), Leon Heale (double bass), Nic Lam (guitar) and Denis Close (Brazilian percussion). 2008 sees Emma working on the release of her album, teaching and performing with small groups and the Dizzy's Big Band. Emma is a teacher of jazz and other styles, stage and vocal technique and has developed the Sure on Stage program for public performance confidence. |
